You have probably been in an argument where both people keep saying essentially the same thing, only louder.

Each person is convinced that if they can explain their position one more time, with slightly better wording or greater emphasis, the other person will finally understand.

Usually, neither person does.

What changes when our first goal is not to be understood, but to understand?

When we feel misunderstood, our attention naturally turns inward. We start preparing our response, correcting details, defending our intentions, and searching for the words that will finally make our position clear.

The problem is that while we are doing that, we are not really listening.

Understanding does not require agreement. You can understand why someone sees a situation differently without deciding they are right. You can recognize the experience behind someone's opinion without abandoning your own.

That distinction creates room for curiosity.

Instead of preparing another argument, we might ask:

What matters most to you about this?

Or:

What am I missing?

A sincere question can open space that another explanation cannot.

Something else often happens when people feel genuinely heard. Their need to defend themselves begins to soften. They may become more willing to hear another perspective because they are no longer fighting simply to have their own acknowledged.

This does not mean every disagreement will disappear. Some differences are real and will remain.

But understanding can change the quality of the disagreement.

The next time a conversation becomes tense, try something simple: before making your next point, ask one sincere question and listen carefully to the answer.

Seeking to understand first does not erase your voice.

It may help create a conversation capable of holding both voices.

Sometimes the shortest path to being heard begins with listening longer.
