Being noticed and being understood are not the same thing.
People may know what you do for work, where you live, the roles you play, or what you have accomplished. They may know plenty of facts about your life without knowing much about what matters to you.
So consider a different question:
If someone understood only one thing about you, what would you want it to be?
Being known is often about biography. Being understood goes deeper.
It includes the values behind our choices, the hopes behind our efforts, and sometimes the fears behind our hesitation. People see what we do, but they do not always see what led us there.
This is one reason misunderstanding happens so easily.
Someone sees a decision but not the circumstances surrounding it. They notice that you declined an opportunity but do not know what you were protecting. They see you change direction without knowing what you learned along the way.
We do not owe everyone a complete explanation of ourselves. But there are times when clearer self-expression can close the distance between how we are perceived and what we genuinely mean.
That clarity begins within.
What do you value?
What are you trying to build?
What have your experiences taught you?
What do you care deeply about?
What do people sometimes misunderstand about you?
These questions matter because it is difficult to communicate what we have never clarified for ourselves.
Try completing this sentence:
“If people understood one thing about me, I would want them to know…”
Then consider whether your words and actions consistently communicate your answer.
We can't control every interpretation. Even when we communicate carefully, people will sometimes misunderstand us. The goal is not to manage everyone’s perception.
It's to live and communicate with greater honesty and intention.
You can't control every interpretation of your story, but you can become clearer about what you most hope others see.
