We tend to think opportunity begins with an announcement.
A job gets posted. Applications arrive. Interviews begin.
But many opportunities start much earlier, often with a conversation.
Someone mentions that a company is growing. A business owner tells a colleague they need help. A trusted contact says, “I know someone you should meet.”
By the time an opportunity becomes public, relationships may already be shaping who gets considered.
That is not necessarily unfair. It reflects something businesses have always valued: trust reduces uncertainty.
A résumé can describe experience. A referral adds context.
Someone is effectively saying, “I know this person. I have seen how they work. They are worth talking to.”
That carries weight.
For job seekers, this changes how we should think about networking. The goal is not to collect contacts or ask strangers for jobs. It is to build genuine professional relationships before you need something from them.
Be useful. Stay curious. Help people when you can. Let others understand what you do well and what kind of problems you can solve.
For employers, there is a lesson too.
Trusted networks can reveal capable people who may never respond to a traditional job posting. Referrals can widen the conversation beyond a stack of anonymous applications and create introductions grounded in real-world relationships.
Technology may make hiring faster, but relationships often make it more human.
The hidden job market is not really hidden.
Much of it is simply moving through conversations you are not yet part of.
That makes the better question less about where the next opportunity will be posted and more about this:
Who knows what you are capable of when the right conversation begins?
