Too many people enter a networking event thinking about what they want to leave with.
A new client. A referral. A promising lead.
That mindset changes the way we show up. Conversations become pitches. Introductions become opportunities. Handshakes start to feel like transactions.
There is a better approach.
The strongest networkers often begin with a different question:
How can I help?
That might mean introducing two people who would benefit from knowing each other. It could mean sharing an idea that helps someone solve a problem, recommending a useful book or tool, or simply celebrating another person’s success without expecting anything in return.
These actions may seem small, but they communicate something important: you are interested in the relationship, not merely the result.
And relationships are where trust begins.
Giving first does not mean ignoring your own business goals. It means recognizing that good networking works best when value moves in more than one direction.
At your next event, try measuring success differently.
Instead of counting how many people heard your pitch, ask how many people you helped.
Did you make a meaningful introduction?
Did you listen closely enough to understand what someone needed?
Did you leave another person better connected, better informed, or simply more encouraged than before you met?
Your reputation is built through moments like these.
People remember those who are generous with their attention, knowledge, and connections. Over time, that generosity creates something far more valuable than a stack of business cards: trust.
The best networkers do not enter every room asking, “What can I get?”
They become valuable by asking, “What can I contribute?”
And often, opportunity follows.
