“Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who act on them are worth millions.”

I used that line often while running the Innovations Project, where we evaluated thousands of inventions and product concepts over four years.

Only about a hundred eventually reached the market.

That experience taught me something important: having an idea is rarely the difficult part. The real challenge is turning an idea into something people actually value.

The projects that succeeded tended to share three qualities.

First, they offered a meaningful advantage. A new product needed to solve a problem better, save money, improve quality, or provide something customers genuinely valued. Being different was not enough. The difference had to matter.

Second, the successful ideas had a clear destination. The strongest innovators understood who they were trying to serve and why that group would care. “Everyone” is rarely a useful target market. Progress often begins with a smaller group of people who feel the problem most strongly.

Third, and perhaps most importantly, the idea had a champion.

Someone had to believe in it enough to keep moving when enthusiasm faded, obstacles appeared, or the first attempt failed.

The Post-it Note is a familiar example. 3M scientist Spencer Silver developed an adhesive that appeared unsuccessful because it was weaker than intended. But the idea did not disappear. Continued curiosity eventually helped reveal a practical use for something that initially looked like a failure.

Innovation often works that way.

A worthwhile idea still needs testing, refinement, focus, and someone willing to carry it forward.

We tend to celebrate the moment inspiration strikes. But most meaningful progress happens afterward, in the less glamorous work of asking better questions, listening to customers, adjusting the plan, and continuing when the outcome is uncertain.

Ideas matter.

What we do with them matters more.
