“Tell me about yourself.”

Most of us answer by naming our roles.

I’m a mother. A wife. A teacher. A business owner. A caregiver. A volunteer.

These answers are not wrong. Our roles reveal our responsibilities, relationships, and values.

But ask a different question, “Who are you when you are not doing those things?” and the answer may become harder.

The roles we play can become so familiar that we forget they are expressions of who we are, not the entire definition.

Roles give us purpose, belonging, routine, and a sense of usefulness. Some are chosen. Others arrive through birth, necessity, culture, or circumstance. Over time, “what I do” can quietly become “who I am.”

That is why transitions can feel so unsettling.

Children leave home. A career ends. Caregiving responsibilities change. A marriage ends. A business closes. A leadership role passes to someone else.

These changes affect more than our schedules. They can disturb our sense of identity.

The space between who we have been and who we are becoming may feel empty. But it may actually be unfinished.

One way forward is to look beneath the role.

A teacher may have expressed curiosity, encouragement, and clarity. A caregiver may have strengthened compassion and resilience. A business owner may have developed creativity, problem-solving, and courage.

The title may change. The qualities remain.

It can also help to ask what parts of yourself have been waiting for more room.

What did you once enjoy? What would you like to learn? When do you feel most like yourself? What qualities have followed you through many different seasons?

Try completing the sentence “I am…” without using a job title or relationship label.

Perhaps you are curious. Playful. Thoughtful. Creative. Still learning. Someone who helps others feel less alone.

Your roles are important threads in your life, but no single thread creates the entire pattern.

When a role ends, you are not starting from nothing.

You are starting with everything it revealed, strengthened, and awakened within you, along with the parts of yourself that may finally have room to speak.
